OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER, the Manchester United forward, appears to be losing the battle to save his career after suffering yet another setback in his recovery from the horrific knee injury that has kept him out of action since the FA Cup Final victory over Millwall in May 2004.
Solskjaer, in the final year of his contract at Old Trafford, had hoped to be in contention to make a long-awaited comeback for United next month, but Lars Petersson, a specialist he has visited in Sweden, revealed yesterday that the 32-year-old’s return to action has been put back indefinitely because of a new problem.
“He has picked up a tear inside the knee. It is a very recent injury,” Petersson said. “I thought he might be back in October, but it’s impossible to set a date now.”
Asked whether he could assure Solskjaer that he would play again, the doctor replied: “No, I’m never 100 per cent in these cases.”
Even before the latest setback, Sir Alex Ferguson, the manager, had expressed fears for Solskjaer, one of his most loyal servants, saying that “he is doing well, but not well enough. He’s had a terrific attitude and, when people have that kind of determination, you really want them to get there, but it’s difficult, to be honest.”
Solskjaer, who arrived at Old Trafford nine years ago in a £1.5 million deal from Molde, the Norwegian club, has provided a useful option up front and in midfield and has scored 117 goals in 330 appearances for United in all competitions.
